Introduction

Welcome to Andorra la Vella, the capital of the Pyrenees.

Andorra la Vella, capital of the Pyrenees, is the country's nerve centre. The city offers visitors a major commercial centre with first-class hotel provision and a range of food and drink that is broad enough to satisfy the most diverse and demanding requirements.

The city is on a narrow river plain, enabling the urban area to be in constant contact with the natural environment. In the city centre, the Central park is a great place to rest and relax. The Solà and L’Obac irrigation channels have become flat promenade areas that are easily accessible from the centre.

Other paths such as Palomera, Santa Coloma and Margineda penetrate deeper into the surrounding countryside. Walkers also have mountain paths such as the Prat Primer trail and nature lovers and culture buffs will enjoy the natural and cultural landscapes of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Similarly, climbing and via ferrata enthusiasts can climb the most famous peaks in the parish.

Both the capital and in Santa Coloma can see many examples of Romanesque and Pre-Romanesque art, present throughout the Pyrenees; places particularly worth visiting are Santa Coloma church and La Margineda bridge. You can also see Medieval military architecture at Enclar rock. The building that best explains and preserves the Principality's past and present is La Casa de la Vall, dating from the 16th century and today the headquarters of the Consell General, the Parliament of Andorra.

Contemporary culture is present and well regarded, with a music and dance season, theatre season, International Clowning Festival, exhibition halls, galleries, cinemas, etc.

Popular culture is also celebrated with many festivals such as the Sant Antoni "escudella", Carnival, Andorra la Vella's annual festival and Medieval market, and the Santa Llúcia Fair.

So it is natural that granite is one of the most common types of stone used in traditional building, and is still in use today. Inside the open geology Roques al carrer museum, the granite architecture tour takes you to see magnificent examples of buildings where the art of mid-20th century stonemasons can be seen in its full splendour.

Andorra la Vella is not only a trade and leisure capital, but also famous for its natural heritage. The southern part of the parish has a continental Mediterranean climate, but the higher areas, at over 2,400 m., have a climate influenced by the Atlantic. The lower areas include agricultural fields, shrubs, oak trees (the most abundant) and even holm oaks. Higher up you see forests of red and black pine with undergrowth made up of rhododendrons, myrtle and bearberry. But, once over the tree line, you find Alpine meadows. However, the magnificent forests standing alongside rivers and streams or the rock formations of the Enclar massif should not be forgotten.

The following tours will serve to discover the natural landscapes surrounding this urban area, taking you along paths of varying length and difficulty, on strolls along the river bank or on long walks to the highest points in the parish.
