Flu: coordinated response
Andorra is prepared to anticipate and treat flu cases. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Employment has reinforced supervision, putting together preventive measures and working in coordination with international health institutions. In addition, the country has the necessary medical equipment and infrastructures to deal with cases of the virus, which is highly contagious but has a very low mortality rate and does not present serious symptoms.
In response to the WHO warning on the spread of the potentially pandemic virus, the Government of Andorra has put a plan into place to face up to the easily-contracted, low-mortality virus: :
1. GREATER VIGILANCE The Government has set up a scientific supervision committee to advise the ministry in setting out preventive measures and responses for potential cases.
2. PURCHASING PROTECTION EQUIPMENT The Government has stocks of masks and medication (vaccines, Tamiflu).
3. INFORMATION AND VACCINATION OF THE POPULATION AT RISK A vaccination plan will be put into place and an information plan for residents has already begun, including the webpage www.grip.ad, the publication of information leaflets and a special flu information line (18021122).
4. ORGANISATION AND RESPONSE IN CASE OF ILLNESS Healthcare coordination has been worked on, both with regards to out patients and hospitals, in order to ensure those with health problems are treated in the face of increased healthcare demand in a pandemic situation.
In light of the world epidemiological situation, isolation measures for those in contact with flu cases are not necessary.
If flu symptoms appear (high fever, general discomfort, etc.), you should call 116 where the case will be assessed and the patient will be advised on the best medical steps to be followed for their needs.
